Boston Lyric Opera launches ''The Blo Bunch'' for students

This is not your grandparents’ opera…

Boston Lyric Opera launches The BLO Bunch – a special student subscription and interactive review blog
Subscription includes admission to the BLO Twitter lounge, post-performance soirees and the chance to post reviews on BLO’s student blog

BOSTON – We get it. A lot of young people probably think opera is stuffy. Staid. For the older set. But what if opera – with its gorgeous divas, dashing maestros, grand costumes and over-the-top storylines – could be interactive? What if it could connect students with a broader community of other young lovers of music, high drama and theatre?
That’s exactly what BLO aims to do this season, by offering students a chance to join THE BLO BUNCH. Think of the program as an opportunity to save a ton of money on great seats by subscribing to Boston Lyric Opera’s full seasonal program while syncing up with other students online, in the theatre and after performances.

BLO Bunch members will attend the opera in a theatre filled with other students during the Wednesday Series this season at Boston’s elegant Shubert Theatre. During intermissions, they’ll have access to a special Twitter lounge, where they can broadcast to friends and followers how much fun they’re having. After the show, they’ll move on
to a student-only after-party. Subscriptions start at just $51!

This season’s exciting line-up of productions includes:

  • Tosca, NOV. 10, 2010: Puccini’s tale of jealousy, lust, murder and suicide.
  • Agrippina, MARCH 16, 2011: Handel’s music soars as the ultimate stage mother pushes her rotten son, Nero, towards the Emperor’s throne.
  • A Midsummer Night’s Dream, MAY 4, 2011: Britten’s take on Shakespeare’s classic dreamscape, filled with sprites, mortals and unrequited love.
The BLO Bunch Blog

For the BLO Bunch, the glamour and fun of the opera does not end at curtain call. After the performances, BLO invites students to post their reviews, impressions and photos on the new student-only blog, www.theblobunch.blogspot.com. The site will publish unedited reviews by student journalists, ideas, reviews and tidbits from BLO Bunch members, as well as photos from the theatre. (Please remember to refrain from taking photos during the performances – only in the lobby and during intermissions!) Students are also encouraged to post regularly about their general impressions of opera and opera news.
Students can also be featured as one of The BLO Bunch. Just email photos to theblobunch@gmail.com to be rotated into our frames, alá the Brady Bunch! Beyond the blog, students can also participate in videos for The BLO Bunch. From theatre tours to performance discussions, BLO Bunch videos cover a range of topics.

To join: Subscribe online at https://blo.org/subscription_new.html and enter BLO Bunch in the Special Seating Request field. Or, call Audience Services at 617.542.6772, Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and specify your status as a student.
