Boston Lyric Opera, The Emperor of Atlantis, or Death Quits

Art, tyranny and the indomitable human spirit at the Boston Public Library. Boston Lyric Opera hosts FREE presentation on the art and music of Theresienstadt with a mini performance from its upcoming opera

The Emperor of Atlantis, or Death Quits

WHAT:  In preparation for its new Opera Annex production of The Emperor of Atlantis, or Death Quits (opening Feb. 1), Boston Lyric Opera will host a one-hour program focused on “The Art of Theresienstadt,” featuring speakers from Facing History and Ourselves and the Terezín Chamber Music Foundation. The presentation will explore how prisoners in the concentration camp created magnificent works of art and music, such as The Emperor of Atlantis, or Death Quits, under the grimmest of circumstances. For these brave artists, mere survival was not enough. Instead, they expressed their creativity and humanity through music, poetry, painting and drawing. Jennifer Jones-Clark, Associate Program Director for Facing History and Ourselves New England, will explore select works of art. A representative from the Terezín Chamber Music Foundation will also introduce musical compositions created in the camp. A mini-performance by a cast member from The Emperor of Atlantis, or Death Quits, will follow the presentation.

WHEN: Wednesday, JANUARY 19, 7 to 8 p.m.

WHERE: Rabb Lecture Hall at the Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston
Street, Boston

This presentation is the second in a series of four “Opera Night at the Boston Public Library” programs highlighting BLO’s 2010-2011 Season. Save the date for future programs!
