Boston Lyric Opera and Temple Israel offer a conversation on
The Emperor of Atlantis, or Death Quits
WHAT: Join the Boston Lyric Opera and Temple Israel for a FREE community discussion spotlighting the Company’s new Opera Annex production of The Emperor of Atlantis, or Death Quits, opening Feb. 1 at the Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA.
Hope, humor and the human spirit prevail in this rarely-staged opera, when Death takes life’s side against an evil Emperor. In 1943, composer Viktor Ullmann and poet Petr Kien created this almost inconceivably wry and uplifting production in the concentration camp Terezín. Part of the Recovered Voices project, dedicated to reviving
works suppressed by the Third Reich, The Emperor of Atlantis has its roots in the Holocaust, but survives as a rich testament to freedom and humanity. The discussion will shed light on the history and legacy of the piece, allowing the community to enter into a dialogue with the production’s stage director and conductor, as well as BLO’s leading artistic staff.
This event is generously hosted by Temple Israel.
PANELISTS INCLUDE:
Nicholas G. Russell, BLO’s Director of Artistic Operations (moderator)
Esther Nelson, BLO’s General & Artistic Director
Steven Lipsitt, Conductor
David Schweizer, Stage Director
WHEN: TUESDAY, JAN. 11, 2011 at 7 p.m.
